Now, some gems of this legendary label is again available in CD's from Atomic Records,
but the 14 december 2009, Gianni Morelenbaum Gualberto says that the real HORO CDs, completely remastered, will be out in a couple of months at the latest, starting with a 3-package CDs with David Schnitter by Freddie Hubbard, Billy Childs, Larry Klein and Carl Burnett

Frank Rosolino - August 20, 1926, Detroit, Michigan / November 26, 1978, Los Angeles, California - will be remembered and respected throughout the contemporary jazz world for his mastery of the trombone, his uncanny ability to fit and work successfully with a wide range of musical ideas, and perhaps last but not entirely forgotten, his wit and capacity for comic entertainment. There has seldom been a time when any single aspect of this amazingly complex individual was submerged for any great length of time. He was always the superb performer, upfront individually as a musician or commercially as an entertainer.

Here come the '70s and in full pop and rock age, Umiliani enters in his Sound Work Shop studio to record "Jazz A Confronto No. 35" on HORO label.

The album is a vibrant ode to Duke Ellington, played with friends Cicci Santucci, Nino Culasso, Marcello Boschi, Gianni Basso and other famous names in italian jazz.

Finally Umiliani, age 48, thirty years after finding that record forbidden called "Hot Duke" in a little shop in Florence, he feels ready to dedicate a tribute to his idol, his inspiration.

Those tracks will be reprinted in the 2000 CD "Ode to Duke Ellington" (Easy Tempo ET 935) with the addition of special versions of Ellington songs recorded by Umiliani in it's activities.

Lee Konitz (born October 13, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American jazz composer and saxophone player.

Konitz is sometimes regarded as the preeminent cool jazz saxophonist, because he performed and recorded with Claude Thornhill, Lennie Tristano and with Miles Davis on his epochal Birth of the Cool, which gave the form its name.

Konitz has also been repeatedly noted as one of the few jazz saxophonists of the late 1940s and 1950s who did not seem imitative of the massively influential Charlie Parker.

Stafford James has been in the front lines for 30 years. He is thankful for the early encouragement he received from artists like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and his mentor, bass giant Charles Mingus.
“I will always appreciate the way he approached me as a young musician trying to get out of the bucket and find my own direction”.

He recorded with the legendary Albert Ayler (“Music is the Healing Force”), with Dexter Gordon

In the Seventies, going often to meet, in big cities like Rome or Milan, the great African American musicians who came to give concerts, but it was a little more rare to find Italian jazz musicians, or producers, who took advantage of these "trips".
Once it was successful, for example, on 24 October 1970, when Giorgio Buratti, taking advantage of some free hours of the group that Charles Mingus had presented to International Jazz Festival in Milan, he recorded the excellent LP "A Smooth Day" by Dannie Richmond, Jaki Byard, Eddie Preston and Bobby Jones (soon on Jazz from Italy).

Mingus's quintet, returned to Italy in July 1975, and even on that occasion, in a break from the "official tour", the musicians take the opportunity to record their music on vinyl, this vinyl that today you can listen, recorded in Rome by Dannie Richmond, Don Pullen, George Adams, Jack Walrath and more...

This happened a few times, I said, but almost every time, there was Aldo Sinesio.

Closely associated with Charles Mingus, Dannie Richmond was on most of his sessions from 1955-1978, showing impressive versatility.
Richmond and Mingus made for a very potent team, shifting rhythms, tempos, and grooves together, hinting at New Orleans jazz now and then while sometimes playing very freely. Richmond was originally a tenor saxophonist who as a teenager played R&B, touring with Paul Williams.
He took up the drums in 1955, and six months later joined Charles Mingus when he proved that he could play at very fast tempos. During Mingus' off periods, Richmond freelanced with Chet Baker, the group Mark-Almond, Joe Cocker, and even Elton John.
After Mingus' death, Richmond played with Mingus Dynasty and then became a member of the George Adams-Don Pullen Quartet (1980-1985), occasionally leading his own groups.

Until some time ago, my wishlist of HLL, Jazz A Confronto series, was blocked.

I was also thinking about starting to publish, in this same blog, the records of the other two series of HORO, the HZ and the HDP, where Aldo Sinesio recorded, as rare documents that remained over time, musicians like these: Gil Evans, Don Pullen, George Adams, Dave Burrell, Stafford James, Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Ran Blake, David Murray, Sam Rivers, Roy Haynes, Karl Berger, Martial Solal, M.E.V, etc.

Then, with the help of Alessandro, musician and jazz's fan, I had the opportunity to hear two chapters missing in my collection, and also to shorten my wish list, and I'm here.

The first one that I share with you, is the Jazz A Confronto n° 24.

Enrico Pieranunzi six years

According to Enrico Pieranunzi discography, compiled by Maurizio Franco and published in the Musica Jazz magazine, this is the first LP recorded by the roman pianist as a leader.

This discography, including his records only until 1993, is the most complete documentation on the recordings of the first Pieranunzi.

JAZZ A CONFRONTO 23 - STEVE GROSSMAN - HLL 101-23

STEVE GROSSMAN was born in New York City on January 18, 1951.
When Wayne Shorter left the Miles Davis band in 1969, his place was taken by 18 year old, Grossman.

Initially the teenager was much criticized, yet his fresh approach and an emotional intensity beyond his years added much to the band. Grossman studied saxophone with his brother, starting on alto, moving to soprano and tenor by 1968. He played with a number of groups including the Jazz Samaritans, with George Cables and Lenny White before joining Davis and recording his first sessions.
During the 70s Grossman played with Lonnie Liston Smith and in Elvin Jones' group and in 1975 founded the Stone Alliance with Gene Perla. Since 1991, Grossman has completed a handful of top-notch albums for Dreyfus Records.

His most recent recordings prior to Quartet are a live trio date from 1989, “Bouncing with Mr. A. T.”, released as a tribute to the late drummer Art Taylor, “Time to Smile”, a 1993 studio date bedrocked by Elvin Jones; and the wholly spectacular “In New York”, taken from a 1991 club stay that featured Taylor on drums and McCoy Tyner on piano.
Presently shuttling between Italy and France, Steve Grossman is in the full flower of his artistic maturity.

Potent display of the saxophonist's heartfelt playing and improvisatory genius are found on his recent sides, “Steve Grossman Quartet Featuring Michel Petrucciani” and “Steve Grossman/Johnny Griffin Quintet”.

I bought this vinyl on e-bay, and the seller knew that the cover identify the first printing of the record, but when this record I was delivered, inside label identified it as a reprint (you remember the specifications of this label?).
Once placed it on the turntable, I understood the reason for this exchange: the B side is just VG-, because of several clicks away disturbing listening, especially toward the end of the track "Traceys Of Daniel".
Happens.
But the music of Don Pullen, and his companions, made me forget the trick of the seller.

Malcom Earl "Mal" Waldron was born in New York in 1926, in the sign of Leo, whose symbolism - we all know - is based on realization, rationality, honor, generosity and nobleness.
Saturn is out of sight, so no sense of death, of firmness and malediction is present.
Both the man and the musician seem to be the exemplification of a tipical Sun-influenced person. The body is swift, average tall; the forehead is broad and it gives an impression of serenity.

Kenny Clarke (born Kenneth Clarke Spearman, later aka, Liaqat Ali Salaam, on January 9, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-died January 26, 1985 in Paris, France) was a jazz drummer and an early innovator of the bebop style of drumming. As the house drummer at Minton's Playhouse in the early 1940's, he participated in the after hours jams that led to the birth of Be-Bop, which in turn lead to modern jazz. He is credited with creating the modern role of the ride cymbal as the primary timekeeper.

Before, drummers kept time on the high-hat and snare drum (”digging coal”, Clarke called it) with heavy support from the bass drum. With Clarke time was played on the cymbal and the bass and snare were used more for punctuation. This led to a much more relaxed style of drumming. From this point more and more rhythms and poly-rhythms are made possible. For this, “every drummer” Ed Thigpen said, “owes him a debt of gratitude.” Clarke was nicknamed “Klook” or “Klook-mop” for the style he innovated.

Clarke was a founder member of the Modern Jazz Quartet (as the Milt Jackson Quartet) in 1951 and also participated in many recording sessions as house drummer for Savoy Records. Connie Kay took his place in the MJQ in 1955 and from 1956 Clarke was resident in France where he regularly worked with visiting American musicians in Paris, in particular forming a working trio, known as “The Bosses”, with Bud Powell and Pierre Michelot.

Later in 1961, with Belgian pianist Francy Boland he formed a regular big band featuring leading European and ex-patriate American musicians, including among many others, Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor saxes. The big band, which had been the idea of Italian producer Gigi Campi, lasted for eleven years.

Thanks to the advice of kingsilvertone and fslmy, I decided to republish all the records music of HORO in high quality, recorded by the original vinyl 32-bit, setting the playback speed to 320kbps.

I decided to start from the last volume published in this blog, and to date, I've re-edited, in high quality, the volumes 18, 17 and 16 of JAZZ A CONFRONTO series, but I promise you, it will reload all the records of HORO with this system.

So, if you want the highest quality of one of the best labels ever existed in jazz, you rerun the download.

Each new upload will be clearly reported and, of course, I'll continue to publish the subsequent volumes to complete this amazing discography.

In this anthology, published by Aldo Sinesio at the middle of the the story of HORO, we find some alternative path of previous volumes, such as Johnny Griffin and Sal Nistico, one "anticipation", because this was the track of Steve Grossman, on the date which this collection was put on the market, and a curious experiment.

Three of these pieces all came out of the same session, in which Franco Ambrosetti's quartet was recording, but in this case the various components of the quartet meved into a freer pattern, breaking the structure of the group, creating small nuclei.

Sal Nistico, born Salvatore Nistico 2 April 1938 in Syracuse (New York), died 3 March 1991 in Berne, Switzerland, was a jazz tenor saxophonist associated for many years in the mid-'60s with Woody Herman's Herd.

He started playing alto sax, switching to tenor in 1956 and briefly played baritone sax. In 1965, he joined Count Basie but returned on many occasions to play with Herman. He also played with Nat Adderley, Don Ellis, Stan Tracey, Chuck Mangione and Buddy Rich.

While not a well-known public figure, he was highly respected by his fellow tenor sax players as a “musicians' musician”. Sal's solo work contrasts his big band work. The solo work is more bebop oriented, as heard on the Heavyweights recordings.

In 1973 Enrico Rava plays in Rome, with Bruce Johnson, Chip White and John Abercrombie, the same ones with whom he recorded the beautiful "Katcharpari" for BASF, and on that occasion that he knows Massimo Urbani.

The encounter with this amazing little boy who plays the alto sax, marks the future musical choices of Rava and, once back in New York, he decides to call him to play in his new quartet, with Calvin Hill and Michael Carvin, projecting the young saxophonist in an international dimension, for attitudes and repertory.
The quartet plays for fifteen days at the Saint James Infirmary, the Club of Roswell Rudd and in the summer of 1974 Rava leads the group on a European tour which would have provided for a ECM recording, but that did not ever.

A few months later, Enrico Rava back in Italy, with Nestor Astarita on drums, replacing Carvin.

That quartet, today, is almost forgotten.
although their music is recorded in a historic LP, out of the market for years, the volume 14 of the Jazz A Confronto, the next.

"It was a group with few rivals in the world : they mastered by sovereign security the most advanced forms of jazz's language, enriched with a large sign, melodic and virile ... their music was bold but solid, dense and intensely lyrical, and the two soloists improvised with the sound-form, making it hot, aggressive, ironic and, above all, free." (Marcello Piras).

Just days before the recording of that historic quartet, Aldo Sinesio decides to record the brilliant roman saxophonist, with the same rhythm section, but without Rava.
Probably, this is not the best record Massimo Urbani, but this is the first recording as a leader, and remains a memorable page.

Teddy Wilson was born November 24, 1912 in Austin, Texas.
At the age of 17 years, having studied piano, violin and composition, he moved to Detroit, where he played with local musician.
From that moment, we find him at the side of the greatest jazzmen: with Louis Armstrong, Erskine Tate, Jimmy Noone, Benny Carter or Benny Goodman.
But is, above all, in his superb capacity to "accompany" Billie Holiday that Wilson expresses his most poetic.

It may seem strange that such a great pianist has rarely played his pieces, but it's the challenge of playing the compositions of others, until they own, that Teddy wanted to show us her exquisite musical sensibility and her undeniable mastery of music.

Precisely for this reason, you will not find this recording on shared on this blog, but I gladly make you hear the first track, MUSIC INN BLUES, dedicated to one of the historic jazz clubs in Rome.

Renato Sellani was born in Senigallia (Ancona) in 1927.
At age 12 he began playing the organ in the church of his country, a few years later began studying the piano as an autodidact.
In 1950 he moved to Rome, host of Umberto Cesàri which receives the fundamental teachings.
Later, at the invitation of Franco Cerri, he moved to Milan where in September 1958, joined the legendary group "Basso & Valdambrini", which will work with up to 1971.
Also in '58 has in tourné with Lee Konitz, then with Chet Baker, with whom he recorded in 1959.
In 1961 he participated in three recordings of saxophonist and flutist Buddy Collette.
In his career he has beautifully accompanied famous singers, like Nicola Arigliano, Lilian Terry, Renata Mauro, Helen Merrill, Ginger Rogers, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday also.

His piano is present in many important pages of Italian jazz, recorded on vinyl, even if, in his name, he has recorded "only" a dozen historical records.
Among these I remember the first “Un Pianoforte per Due Innamorati” (1963), the first in piano solo, which opened the label DIRE (1969), the beautiful "Tizia", still in piano solo (1976) and the duet with Gianni Basso (1977)

In recent years, thanks to Paolo Piangiarelly of Philology, he has recorded another thirty important records, reworking some masterpieces of Italian songs in a unique way, elegant, rich in emotion and silence as his music.
For the same label he has recorded as co-leader with Lee Konitz, Tony Scott, Phil Woods, Irio De Paula, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Enrico Rava, Gianni Basso, Franco D’Andrea, Fabrizio Bosso, Barbara Casini and the rising stars Gianluca Petrella, Francesco Cafisio and Michela Lombardi, with whom he recorded two beautiful tributes to Chet Baker.

This is the first meeting, and the only on record, from two great jazz master, supported from the young hopes of the italian jazz, like a Massimo Urbani, Maurizio Giammarco and Toni Formichella.

These young musicians followed the first course of jazz that Gaslini held to the conservatory of S. Cecilia of Rome, with also to Patrizia Scascitelli, Bruno Tommaso, Tommaso Vittorini and more

So, the critics tells that, between Schiano e Gaslini, there was hostility, because Schiano had recorded for first the young lions on the beginning of 1973, in your beautiful "SUD".

Really, it had happened because Mario Schiano knew the roman jazz clubs much more that the academic pianista.

When Aldo Sinesio proposed he to recording for the HORO, Schiano proposed to meet Gaslini, own with "they" young students.

All roman jazz world said that Giorgio would not have accepted.

That day, Gaslini, was not only introduced in advance in the "Titania" studies, but in all two tracks that it recorded with Schiano, there is a clear message.

In one it's on the title "Unità", in the second it's in the beauty and in the grace of the composition "Canto Ritrovato", an ancient Lombardic song relaborated from he.

This is the first meeting, and the only on record, from two great jazz master, supported from the young hopes of the italian jazz.

Saxophonist, flautist and clarinetist, was born in Emilia Romagna, but when he was in Italy, has always lived in Milan.

In the Seventies, he began his experience as a sound engineer, testified by wonderful recordings for various labels.

All discs recorded by him, are distinguished by the color and clarity of sound.

His contribution to music has been enormous and, as often happens, undervalued in life and discovered too late.

His approach to jazz after 1945, through the recording of Charlie Parker and Stan Getz.Five years later, a leader of the Jazz Club of Padua, listens casually and presents him, for the first time, to the Italian public.
Already in 1953 he recorded two sides for Columbia, with Eraldo Volonte, Gil Cuppini and other, but, despite the successes, for Barigozzi in our small country begin the difficulties.

In 1955 he accepts some records abroad, in France, Germany and Sweden.

Two years later, Barigozzi decides to leave for the Far East, with the italian trumpeter Mario Costalunga. For several years will play his music between Singapore, Saigon, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
In 1965 he returned to Italy and performs some of his most important experiences in jazz, playing with Chet Baker, Lionel Hampton and Jack Teagarden.

Many of his recordings, among which I like to remember in addition to this, the quartet recorded in 1971 for the DIRE, "Flautissimo" and "Woman's Colours", both recorded for FONOVIDEO.

GIANCARLO SCHIAFFINI, composer-trombonist-tubist, was born in Rome in 1942 and graduated in Physics at the University of Rome in 1965. Self-taught, he appeared as soloist in the first free-jazz concerts in Italy and subsequently presented his own compositions widely in the mid 1960’s.

In 1970 he studied at Darmstadt with Stockhausen, Ligeti and Globokar and formed the contemporary chamber ensemble Nuove Forme Sonore. He also worked with Franco Evangelisti in 1972 and has since collaborated with the Gruppo di Improvvisazione di Nuova consonanza until 1983. In 1975 he founded the Gruppo Romano di Ottoni performing Renaissance and Contemporary music. He is member of the well known Italian Instabile Orchestra.

At present he teaches at the Conservatorio “A. Casella” in l’Aquila and at the Summer Courses of Siena Jazz. He teaches also Contemporary Music, Jazz and Improvisation in Clinics and Seminars all over the World (like New York University, Monash University Melbourne, Hochschule Freiburg i. B., Acanthes-Villeneuve d’Avignon, UNEAC-Cuba).

He plays Contemporary Music, Jazz and Improvisation in concerts and International Festivals of Contemporary music and Jazz like Teatro alla Scala, Accademia di S. Gianni Basso can be unequivocally regarded as one of the most significant historical figures of Italian jazz.

His music shows how to play in the tradition, without ignoring the force of the evolution of jazz, and without rejecting the most advanced experiences free, as evidenced by the music of this LP, recorded for Aldo Sinesio in Rome, february 1973.

Listen "Bloom" and "LA VALLE DELL’AMORE," the two tracks of Bruno Tommaso present in both LPs, or the free track "ALEX", and then tell me if this giant of jazz hasn’t reinvented everything, from avant-garde to the mainstream.

Another example of his great music is documented on "HIT" , recorded in Milan two years later, available now at Carosello-Jazz from Italy Blog, where Gianni engages, for the first time, the soprano sax.

Born in Asti in '31, his professional activity began in Belgium in 1946, with the militancy within the Raoul Falsan Big Band, where he distinguished as clarinetist and tenor sax.

At the same time as playing with different musicians in Europe and U.S., especially in Germany and Austria.
In '50 Basso leaves the Falsan Orchestra and returns in Italy, where he founded along with Oscar Valdambrini, the prestigious "Basso-Valdambrini Quintet", a very special combo, leader of italian jazz for many years .

During his long and varied career, Gianni Basso has collaborated with extraordinary artists, the most representative of the jazz of all time, from Billie Holiday to Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Joe Venuti, Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin, Zoot Sims, Buddy Colette, beyond to having an intense record activity, both as leader and as a sideman.

Of particular importance is the militancy located in some of the most prestigious international orchestras: as the big bands of Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Clarke / Boland Francis, Thad Jones, Lalo Schifrin and more.
In the late '70s he founded the band Saxes Machine and subsequently fronted the Gianni Basso Big Band.

In his later years, he played with some of the rising stars of jazz, as Fabrizio Bosso and Andrea Pozza, recording his unique music for Philology, by Paolo Piangiarelli.

Critics have defined Irio De Paula as “the most fascinating Brazilian guitarist” and indeed, throughout his log carreer (at only 6 years old, was already played in a band with his brothers and broadcast on the radio in Rio), he has played with the best musicians of his country: Paulo Moura, Baden Powell, Rauzinho, Djalma Ferreira, Juarez , and many others, from Astrud Gilberto to Chico Buarque.

He has recorded over 60 CDs and LPs, some solo and some with artists such as Sal Nistico, Steve Grossman, Dannie Richmond, Archie Shepp, Don Pullen, Ray Mantilla, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Franco D’andrea, and many others.

In the 1970s, Irio De Paula toured Europe with the brazilian singer Elza Soares, and after taking part in the Pescara jazz Festival with his own trio, he decided to stay and reside in Italy.

The HORO Records is one of the most prestigious italian jazz label, founded on 1972 by Aldo Sinesio.

First a filmmaker and later a great record producer, Sinesio has recorded artists as Sun Ra, Lester Bowie, Gil Evans, Max Roach, Archie Shepp and others top musician came to play in Italy during the ten-year spread from ’68 to ’78. He, realizing some of the greats jazz pages of those years, became a key figure in the international music movement, which in Italy played more than a secondary role.

The core of the HORO production was issued on three series:

The first is the HLL 101 “Jazz A Confronto” serie, the best for me, and a most largest of HORO.
In this serie, Sinesio puts to confrontation the italian jazz ways, recording the sounds of great masters like a Gianni Basso, Giorgio Gaslini, Renato Sellani, Giorgio Barigozzi, Oscar Valdambrini with that of the young lions, like a Mario Schiano, Enrico Rava, Massimo Urbani, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Enrico Pieranunzi.
In other recordings, of this same serie, he organized great encounter between the italians of jazz and the best americans jazzmen, like that one of Frank Rosolino and Gianni Basso & Enrico Pieranunzi, or that of Kenny Clarke with Santucci & Scoppa or still that between Johnny Griffin and Franco D’Andrea, Bruno Tommaso e Biriaco.

In the others two series, HZ and HDP, we find Gianni Morelenbaum Gualberto as assistant producer, and the HORO Records became the label of the new jazz vanguard, recording the searches of Don Pullen, George Adams, Dave Burrell, Stafford James, Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Ran Blake, Sam Rivers, Roy Haynes, David Murray, Karl Berger, Martial Solal, M.E.V., Byard Lancaster, Gunter Hampel, Burton Greene, Jeanne Lee, Freddie Hubbard and more, that document with extraordinary wealth of intuitions, the best pages of the jazz post-free of Seventy.

All records are a single sleeves cover, with four different artwork, changed across the years.
Also the artwork of labels changed consequently, except for the first and second blocks.

The artwork is composed by a black drawing on a red background, by Angelo Canevari, with a vertical white band on right with the name of the artist.

The label of volumes from 1 to 5 is red.

First issue of volume 1 has the band on right of a dark brown colour, then it was re-released with a white band.

Selected titles were re-released with the artwork of the subsequent volumes.

· Volumes from 6 to 12 :

The artwork is composed by the same black drawing on a red background, by Angelo Canevari, with vertical red bands placed side by side, disposed on a white background.

The label of volumes from 6 to 12 is red.

Selected titles were re-released with the same sleeve artwork, but with a white label with a red stripe on center disposed horizontally (like 3 serie)

· Volumes from 13 to 24 :

The artwork is composed by a black picture of the artist placed on a horizontal bands background of different colours.
The label of volumes from 13 to 24 is white with a red stripe on center disposed horizontally.
Selected titles were re-released with the artwork and the labels of the subsequent volumes, but also with the white-red labels.

· Volumes from 25 to 35 :

The artwork is composed by a brown painting, by Sandro Lodolo, and a blue band with the name of the artist on top.
All volumes covers with this artwork are fully laminated.
The label of volumes from 25 to 35 is yellow with blue lettering.
